A U.S. study has found that brain scans of 3-year-old children show that neglected children have significantly smaller brains than average. According to neurologists, the primary cause of this difference in brain size is the way their mothers treat them.
The UK's *Daily Mail* reports that scientists say maternal care is not just about emotional nurturing—it also determines the size of a child's brain.
The *Sunday Telegraph* reports that children with larger and more developed brains received attentive care from mothers who were responsive to their needs. In contrast, children with smaller brains were victims of severe neglect and abuse.
The study indicates that, based on brain scan images, smaller brains lack some of the most fundamental regions compared to larger brains. The consequences of these deficiencies are significant: children with larger brains tend to be smarter and more likely to develop empathetic social skills.
Conversely, children with smaller brains are more likely to struggle with drug addiction, commit violent crimes, become unemployed, and rely on government welfare. They are also more prone to mental health issues and other serious health problems.
Professor Allan Schore from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) told the *Sunday Telegraph* that if a baby does not receive proper care before the age of two, it can have a profound impact on their future development.
He pointed out that genes responsible for critical brain functions, such as intelligence, may fail to activate. Tragically, these genes may never develop or emerge.
