According to a report by AFP from Washington, D.C. on the 9th, a study published in the American medical journal *Cancer* suggests that the commonly used anti-arrhythmic drug amiodarone may have serious side effects, increasing the risk of certain cancers, particularly in men.

The study found that patients on long-term high doses of amiodarone had twice the risk of developing cancer compared to those on low doses. Additionally, among men who took high doses daily during the first year, the incidence of cancer was notably higher.

The issue appears to stem from the drug's slow dissolution in fat and slow metabolism, leading to significant accumulation in the body over prolonged use.

Previous research has hinted at associations between amiodarone and lung masses, thyroid cancer, and skin cancer, but no large-scale studies had been conducted.

The latest study, led by Dr. Su Yi-feng from Taipei Veterans General Hospital, tracked 6,418 patients who had taken amiodarone for an average of two and a half years between 1997 and 2008, none of whom had a prior cancer diagnosis.

However, follow-up results revealed that 280 of these patients developed cancer.

Amiodarone, currently marketed as Nexterone by Baxter Healthcare Corporation, was not recommended for discontinuation by the researchers.

Dr. Su Yi-feng suggested that future clinical trials of amiodarone should include cancer risk as a routine report and that further observational studies are necessary. He also advised physicians to remain mindful of the drug's potential to increase cancer risk when prescribing it.
