Set Sleep Time First for Well-Behaved Kids

Does your child sleep at a fixed time every day? Or do they stay up late often, with inconsistent sleep schedules? According to a report by the British newspaper *The Guardian*, if a child's sleep schedule is irregular over the long term—sometimes early, sometimes late—it can disrupt their natural biological clock and negatively impact brain development and behavioral performance.

Such children are more likely to exhibit behavioral issues, including hyperactivity, face difficulties in peer interactions, and even experience emotional disturbances. This study has been published in the journal *Pediatrics*.

Professor Yvonne Kelly from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London explained that the research tracked the bedtime routines and daily behaviors of children at three different age groups: 3, 5, and 7 years old. Among the over 10,000 children studied, those aged 3 had the most irregular bedtimes. By age 7, however, more than half of the children consistently went to bed between 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM.

If irregular sleep schedules at ages 3 and 5 lead to unstable behavior, the good news is that this can be changed. The study also found that children whose bedtimes were gradually adjusted to become more consistent showed significant behavioral improvements. However, if irregular sleep patterns are left unaddressed, behavioral problems may worsen over time.

Therefore, to ensure good behavior and healthy physical and mental development, it’s essential to establish a consistent sleep routine from an early age. This not only promotes better health but also supports balanced growth in all aspects.
