American researchers say that women who take oral contraceptives for more than three years have a 2.05 times higher risk of developing glaucoma compared to those who do not.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center analyzed data from U.S. healthcare and nutrition examination units between 2005 and 2008. They found that among 3,406 women over the age of 40 who completed vision and reproductive health questionnaires, those who had taken oral contraceptives for more than three years were twice as likely to develop glaucoma compared to the general female population.
The researchers noted that there is currently no direct evidence linking oral contraceptives to glaucoma. However, they recommend that gynecologists inform patients about this potential risk when prescribing oral contraceptives. Women who take oral contraceptives long-term should also have their vision checked regularly.
