Another food safety issue has emerged. The Yunlin County Health Bureau conducted spot checks at the Xiluo Fruit and Vegetable Market, testing 11 samples of shredded ginger. Six of them were found to contain sulfur dioxide levels nearly 40 times the legal limit. Upstream suppliers had falsely labeled sulfur dioxide as ammonium alum and sold it to vendors for bleaching shredded ginger. Doctors warn that excessive long-term consumption of these substances can not only easily trigger allergies and asthma but may also increase the risk of dementia.
Health inspectors arrived early at the Xiluo Fruit and Vegetable Market, targeting this ginger vendor after tests revealed excessive sulfur dioxide levels—nearly 40 times the standard. The vendor turned pale when inspectors arrived. The Health Bureau traced the source to Tairong Foods in Chiayi City, where suppliers allegedly misrepresented sulfur dioxide as ammonium alum and sold it to market vendors for bleaching shredded ginger, even forging permits. While both sulfur dioxide and ammonium alum are permitted under food safety regulations, unscrupulous businesses used 40 times the legal limit to keep the ginger looking fresh—preventing discoloration and softening. Authorities are still investigating downstream distribution. Doctors caution that long-term consumption can not only cause allergies and asthma but also increase the risk of dementia, especially for kidney patients with poor metabolism.
