Recent research has found a significant correlation between the use of antidepressants and sperm count. Led by Dr. Peter Schlegel from Cornell Medical Center, the study closely monitored two male patients over a period of two years. These two men were treated with either citalopram or sertraline. Subsequently, it was discovered that their sperm counts had significantly decreased, in fact, approaching zero. When the use of antidepressants was discontinued, their sperm counts rebounded to normal levels. The researchers also observed this phenomenon in over a dozen other patients, although the effect was not as pronounced as in these two cases.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a class of antidepressants that includes the most common ones like Prozac and Zoloft, have been previously linked to issues with ejaculation and impotence. There is a strong association between SSRIs and fertility, as these drugs can cause a significant reduction in sperm count and motility. This issue may be related to damage to the nerves that control the vas deferens.
The findings of this new study urge men using SSRIs to undergo close follow-up with their doctors to determine if they are experiencing such side effects. Among male patients using SSRIs, some may be considering having children. The results of this experiment may have significant implications for them.
This week, the research findings were presented at the 60th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in New Orleans by Cornell Medical Center.
