The American Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the American Chinese Medical Association, and other organizations held a series of events in New York on the 5th to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the formal introduction of Chinese acupuncture to the United States and the significant development of this traditional Chinese medicine in the country.
According to Xinhua News Agency, New York, November 5, in 1971, James Reston, a renowned journalist from The New York Times, wrote about his experience of receiving acupuncture in Beijing, China, to treat post-appendectomy discomfort, sparking an acupuncture craze in the United States. Currently, there are over 50 acupuncture schools and more than 20,000 acupuncturists in the U.S., with the industry's annual output value reaching approximately $1.65 billion.
At the academic symposium hosted by the American Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, several American and Chinese-American experts presented the latest advancements in acupuncture mechanism research and clinical achievements in applying acupuncture to treat common diseases and infertility.
At the celebration banquet, Thomas Reston, the second son of the late journalist Reston and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs in the Carter administration, delivered a speech on behalf of his family, expressing gratitude to the Chinese people and the American acupuncture community. He stated that the acupuncture craze in the U.S. has helped many patients alleviate their pain, indicating that the U.S. and China should not only strengthen political and economic ties but also enhance mutual understanding in culture, history, technology, and other areas.
The American Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine awarded the Reston family in recognition of their contributions to the introduction and development of acupuncture in the United States. Chinese-American artists also performed a variety of exciting programs, including acrobatics, magic, singing, dancing, and folk music.
