Prostatic hyperplasia and hypertrophy usually occur in men over the age of sixty. Elderly men, please be cautious! Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner Dr. Lin Jincheng stated that excessive alcohol consumption, indulgence in desires, catching colds, and perineal injuries may be triggering factors for prostatitis. Prostatic hyperplasia, on the other hand, is caused by the enlargement of the prostate gland leading to lower urinary tract obstruction and difficulty in urination, which is a common disease among elderly men.

Dr. Lin pointed out that the prostate is located within the pelvic cavity, below the bladder and in front of the rectum, shaped like a large chestnut. Its outer capsule is fibrous tissue, beneath which is a layer of involuntary muscle tissue that penetrates deep into the gland. The glandular tissue layer is composed of columnar epithelial cells arranged in a vesicular pattern, with the epithelial cells forming many small ducts that open into the urethra.

Prostatitis is a non-specific infectious disease of the male reproductive system in adults, usually caused by pathogens such as staphylococci infecting through the urethral pathway, such as ascending from acute urethritis, or possibly through skin infections. Patients may experience symptoms like fever, chills, loss of appetite, and general fatigue. Most cases can resolve or be cured on their own, with only a few developing abscesses or becoming chronic.

However, prostatitis corresponds to the symptoms of what TCM calls "retention of urine," where dribbling urination is termed "retention" and complete inability to urinate is termed "blockage." In TCM, the treatment principle is to regulate gonadal endocrine function, using methods to warm the kidneys, boost qi, resolve stasis, and promote diuresis. Unfulfilled sexual desires in young adults, failure to ejaculate, nocturnal emissions, masturbation, withholding ejaculation, and the outflow of decayed semen from the seminal vesicles and prostate may also lead to the condition of turbid semen, which men should be cautious about.

Acute Phase Prohibits Prostate Massage to Avoid Infection Spread

How should patients with prostatitis take care of themselves for better health? TCM practitioner Dr. Lin Jincheng suggested that daily health care should aim to eliminate factors that cause prostatitis. Patients in the acute phase should not undergo prostate massage to prevent the spread of infection. During acute episodes, patients should rest more, drink plenty of water, and maintain smooth bowel movements.

Dr. Lin said that daily preventive health care should strive to eliminate triggering factors, such as avoiding alcohol, spicy foods like chili, onions, garlic, and ginger, preventing colds and perineal injuries, and avoiding cycling. However, patients should also be aware that sexual activity should be minimized or avoided, especially indulgence. Secondly, restoring the patient's confidence is also crucial. If the patient has regular living habits and often soaks in hot water for abdominal prostate massage (except during the acute phase), it can help in early recovery.

It is noteworthy that chronic prostatitis is also prone to causing cystitis, especially after drinking alcohol, consuming spicy foods, or overexertion, with symptoms being particularly pronounced. He emphasized that treating chronic diseases is a characteristic of traditional Chinese medicine, but the speed of recovery from chronic diseases is slow, testing the trust between the TCM practitioner and the patient. Patients should be patient in treating their diseases.

As for elderly men with prostatic hypertrophy, traditional Chinese medicine believes that kidney yang deficiency syndrome is the most common, as the elderly may already have physiological kidney essence deficiency and insufficient kidney yang, often experiencing symptoms like nocturia, mental and physical fatigue, cold body, and cold limbs. In summary, men with the above symptoms should seek medical treatment as soon as possible for the best outcome.
