The couple from Darwin, Australia, the Sankaraja, are perhaps one of the luckiest couples in history. Their newborn daughter, Tuga, grew inside her mother's ovary. Not only did the baby develop to full term, but the mother, Mira Sankaraja, remained healthy without any complications from the ectopic pregnancy.
During prenatal check-ups, 34-year-old Mira showed no abnormalities, although doctors believed she had uterine fibroids and planned to remove them during a cesarean section. However, when doctors at Darwin Private Hospital delivered the baby on the 29th, they were shocked to discover that the so-called "fibroid" was actually the uterus, and the fetus had grown inside the ovary.
Obstetrician Dr. Miller said, "The 2,800-gram fetus moved around just like any other fetus in the mother's belly. Although it stretched the ovarian wall as thin as paper, it didn't rupture it. It's really too lucky." Dr. Miller noted that the chance of a fertilized egg implanting in the ovary is one in 40,000, but "cases of successful births are unheard of."
Most ectopic pregnancies occur when the fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tube, which can endanger the mother's safety. If not naturally miscarried, doctors usually perform an abortion. However, Mira was not diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy during prenatal check-ups, and the baby was born completely healthy.
