High blood lipids are an invisible killer in the blood. The Tainan Hospital of the Department of Health stated that high blood lipids are very common in Taiwan, with one in four people suffering from hyperlipidemia, and 30% to 40% of them are unaware of their abnormal blood lipid levels.

Xu Xiaoci, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physician at the Tainan Hospital of the Department of Health, pointed out that high blood lipids refer to excessively high levels of cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood. Among the top ten causes of death in Taiwan, cerebrovascular diseases, heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension are all closely related to high blood lipids.

In Taiwan, one in four people has hyperlipidemia, with the prevalence of high triglycerides in adults being 25.7%, and low high-density cholesterol being 23.7%.

Xu Xiaoci said that from the perspective of TCM, high blood lipids are caused by deficiencies in the spleen, stomach, heart, and liver, as well as phlegm turbidity and blood stasis. Single-ingredient TCM treatments include lotus leaf, fleeceflower root, hawthorn, alisma, salvia, and tangerine peel. Many pharmaceutical companies have now made these into various health foods for the convenience of patients. However, no medication should be used blindly and must be prescribed by a doctor after diagnosis.

Xu Xiaoci reminded the public to develop habits of balanced and regular meals, consume more fiber-rich foods, eat more fish instead of meat, limit egg yolk consumption to no more than three per week, avoid fried foods, not eat too greasy, avoid drinking more than two cups of coffee a day, and quit smoking. By doing so, the chance of developing high blood lipids will be reduced.
