New research suggests that excessive use of denture adhesive can be harmful to health.

The report, published in the journal "Neurology," was presented by Dr. Sharon P. Nations and colleagues from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, detailing four cases of neuropathy in denture wearers.

All four individuals had abnormally high levels of zinc and abnormally low levels of copper in their blood. Since denture adhesives contain zinc and all four were habitual users of "very large amounts," Nations and his research team believe that excessive use of denture adhesive led to their neuropathy.

The balance of zinc and copper levels in the blood is crucial for nervous system health, as an excess of either can inhibit the other.

Normal blood copper levels range from 0.75 to 1.45 micrograms per milliliter (mL), but the patients in the report had levels below 0.1 to 0.23. As for normal zinc levels, the maximum is 1.10 micrograms per milliliter, but these four individuals had levels ranging from 1.36 to 4.28.

One patient exhibited symptoms including hand weakness and poor balance, while another had arm and leg weakness that required her to use a wheelchair, along with cognitive decline and urinary incontinence. Central News Agency (Translation)
