In a study investigating the breast cancer incidence rate among Norwegian women, Norwegian and American medical researchers unexpectedly discovered that some tumors detected through mammography can naturally disappear, and even invasive breast cancer can sometimes heal without treatment, with the number of cases far exceeding expectations.

The New York Times reported on the 25th that cancer researchers have known for years that the aforementioned report, published in the "Archives of Internal Medicine," emphasizes that since it is impossible to determine whether the detected cancer will disappear or spread, this discovery has no practical application yet.

The study was conducted by Dr. Welch from Dartmouth Medical School in the United States, Dr. Zahl from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, and Dr. Mæhlen from the University of Oslo's Faculty of Medicine.

The researchers originally expected the breast cancer incidence rates in the two groups to be similar, but the group that underwent mammography every two years had a 22% higher incidence of invasive breast tumors than the other group .

Lead researcher Dr. Welch said that the most likely explanation is "some women develop cancer at some point, but later the cancer disappears." The finding does not suggest that mammography causes cancer.

However, some breast cancer experts question these results and urge women to undergo regular mammography to detect breast cancer early, thereby saving many lives.
