The result showed that a store in Beidou Town selling traditional small tangyuan failed the quality test, while others passed. The reason for the failure was the illegal addition of preservatives (dehydroacetic acid), with a content as high as 2.054 grams per kilogram. The Health Bureau has fined the store 30,000 yuan according to the Food Sanitation Management Law and required the store to remove and destroy the non-compliant food.
The inspection personnel from the Food Hygiene Section of the Health Bureau pointed out that the non-compliant store operates in the traditional market of Beidou Town and has been caught violating the rules two or three times in the past few years, making it a "repeat offender".
Ye Yanbo, the director of the Changhua County Health Bureau, said that the fines are based on the number of samples tested. If the products of large manufacturers, which are distributed nationwide, fail the test, the fines will be calculated based on the number of samples. On the other hand, small stores with a smaller distribution area may have a more opportunistic mentality, so consumers should be more careful.
