Reporter Xu Xialian / Taichung Report

A 25-year-old nurse in Taichung believed she had excessive menstrual bleeding and tried to compensate by drinking large amounts of Siwu Tang (a traditional Chinese herbal decoction) during her period. Unexpectedly, her bleeding worsened. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician Peng Wenya reminded women that Siwu Tang is not food but medicine and should only be consumed after menstruation ends. Drinking it during the period may lead to increased blood loss, and it’s best to consult a TCM doctor before use.

Dr. Peng Wenya explained that the nurse had been menstruating for over ten days and sought medical help fearing her body couldn’t handle it. The doctor prescribed a modified Xiong Gui Jiao Ai Tang (a TCM formula) to stop the bleeding. Typically, patients respond well to the treatment, but the nurse returned a week later, complaining that her bleeding hadn’t stopped.

It turned out she thought she needed to replenish blood due to heavy bleeding and had been drinking large amounts of Siwu Tang. However, Siwu Tang should only be taken after menstruation, not during. Drinking it at the wrong time worsened her condition.

Dr. Peng noted that Siwu Tang not only replenishes blood but also promotes blood circulation and removes stasis. However, it’s not suitable for everyone, nor should it be consumed year-round or daily. Some female patients have even triggered severe bleeding (metrorrhagia) by treating Siwu Tang as a daily tonic.

She pointed out that during menstruation, aside from avoiding Siwu Tang as a tonic, some patients should also avoid black tea, green tea, or coffee, as caffeine can cause uterine contractions, leading to halted menstruation or abdominal pain. She recommended drinking warm water during periods, or for those unconcerned about weight gain, some sugar water, chocolate, or hot porridge.
