Two studies published today indicate that scientists studying the human genome have discovered 10 common gene mutations that can unknowingly interfere with heartbeats, increasing the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
The report published in *Nature Genetics* points out that the findings identify the causes of arrhythmia, which is often a sign of serious heart problems. The results may also inspire new treatment methods.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heart disease ranks as the leading cause of death globally, with 17 million people dying from it each year.
Smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol are all common risk factors for heart disease, but genetics may also play a significant role. (Translator: Jiang Tianqing)
