A large-scale study of 500,000 middle-aged and elderly Americans found that consuming four ounces of red meat daily (about the size of a small hamburger) increases the risk of death by 30% over the next ten years, with most deaths attributed to heart disease and cancer. Processed meats like sausages and bacon also raise mortality risks.

Previous research has linked red meat to heart disease and cancer, but this study is the first large-scale investigation into the connection between meat consumption and mortality risk. However, regularly eating fish, chicken, turkey, and other poultry may slightly reduce the risk of death.
