Colorectal cancer ranks third among the top ten causes of death in Taiwan, with 4,000 deaths annually. Doctors indicate that about half of colorectal cancer patients experience bloody stools, but many show no symptoms at all, leading to delayed treatment. While it was previously believed that colorectal cancer primarily affected those over 50, recent cases have been found in individuals aged 20-30, likely due to Westernized diets or high work stress.

A 72-year-old woman in Taipei lived a normal life without symptoms like bloody stools, weight loss, or changes in bowel habits. However, during a routine senior health check, her fecal occult blood test came back positive. Given her family history of colorectal cancer, a colonoscopy was recommended, revealing a 1 cm malignant tumor in her colon, 18 cm from the anus—diagnosed as stage III colorectal adenocarcinoma. Dr. Li Binghan from Taipei City Hospital’s Family Medicine Department noted that the patient recovered well after surgery, but a three-month delay could have worsened the prognosis. Many patients with tumors in the upper colon may not exhibit bloody stools, leading to late detection. While colorectal cancer was traditionally associated with those over 50, recent cases in young adults aged 20-30 have been linked to poor diets and high stress.

According to the American Cancer Society, individuals over 50 should undergo annual fecal occult blood tests. Postoperative colorectal cancer patients require a colonoscopy within a year, followed by screenings every three years. Those with a family history should undergo regular screenings. To prevent colorectal cancer, doctors recommend a diet high in fiber (such as fruits and vegetables), avoiding excessive meat, animal fats, or charred grilled foods, along with regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and maintaining daily bowel habits.
