Ms. Zhong’s daughter worked as a flight attendant but tragically took her own life three years ago after suffering withdrawal symptoms from consuming a counterfeit weight-loss drug containing addictive substances. Since then, Ms. Zhong has dedicated herself to exposing counterfeit drugs and recently assisted the Kaohsiung City Police in busting another illegal drug ring.
The Kaohsiung City Criminal Investigation Brigade held a press conference today to announce the crackdown on a counterfeit weight-loss drug operation, arresting six individuals and seizing a batch of fake drugs with a black-market value exceeding NT$15 million. Over the past three years, this ring has victimized hundreds of people. Ms. Zhong attended the press conference with newspaper clippings and reports about her daughter’s death, expressing deep satisfaction with the outcome.
Over the past three years, Ms. Zhong has helped police uncover three counterfeit drug rings, the largest of which had a market value of over NT$19 million. A devout Christian, Ms. Zhong stated, "With God’s protection, what do I have to fear?"
Police clarified that the initial tip-off in this case did not come directly from Ms. Zhong but rather from internal disputes within the drug ring, where members falsely used her name to report the crime to multiple law enforcement agencies. Despite being impersonated, Ms. Zhong was not angered and instead proactively gathered evidence to aid the investigation.
In May, authorities received reports alleging that a counterfeit weight-loss drug ring was exploiting a legitimate pharmaceutical factory in Tainan to process the drugs under contract. After obtaining and testing samples, police discovered that the so-called "herbal" weight-loss pills contained smuggled Western pharmaceuticals, including sibutramine (marketed as "Meridia" or "Reductil"), originating from mainland China.
Investigations revealed that the counterfeit drug ring operated similarly to a pyramid scheme, distributing products nationwide. The ring was led by a suspect surnamed Wang, with an accomplice surnamed Hu responsible for sourcing materials and contracting production to pharmaceutical factories. The finished counterfeit drugs were then distributed by a wholesaler surnamed Wu. Due to substantial profits, the ringleader and key members used luxury cars for transportation.
The task force simultaneously raided locations in Taoyuan and Tainan, apprehending the ring’s wholesaler (surnamed Wu), leader (surnamed Wang), and accomplices (surnamed Hu, Liao, Li, and Yan). Authorities also seized 45.48 kg of weight-loss drug powder, 83.34 kg of unencapsulated weight-loss capsules, over 40,000 pre-packaged capsules, drug packaging containers, boxes, and ingredient formulation documents, with a total black-market value of approximately NT$15 million. 980917
