Whether they are new or experienced mothers, when a child has a fever, they become more anxious than anyone about using medication. According to a domestic online survey, over 60% of mothers immediately resort to medication when their child has a fever, mostly using leftover fever-reducing drugs or suppositories. Dr. Zhou Yihong, a contracted physician at Zhongshan Hospital, reminds mothers not to be overly anxious. The best way to reduce fever is through "step-by-step fever reduction" rather than relying on quick-acting medications.
According to a "Mother and Child Fever Reduction Survey" conducted in mid-May by BabyHome, a family and parenting website with 500,000 members, "child fever" is the top health concern for all mothers. Additionally, the survey shows that over 60% of mothers administer medication to their children at the first sign of fever, mostly using leftover fever-reducing drugs or suppositories.
Is this approach to medication correct? Dr. Zhou Yihong reminds parents that fever reduction in children typically takes 1 to 3 days, so mothers should not be overly anxious. He also emphasizes that the best way to handle a child's fever is through "step-by-step fever reduction" to help alleviate their discomfort.
Dr. Zhou Yihong explains that when a child's temperature, measured via ear or rectal methods, falls between 37.5°C and 38.5°C, it is best to first use non-medication fever-reduction methods, such as drinking more water or taking a lukewarm bath. Only when the temperature exceeds 38.5°C should medication be considered. He stresses that improper use of medication may place additional burdens on the child's body.
Additionally, he offers five suggestions for mothers using non-medication fever-reduction methods: maintaining room temperature at 25°C, reducing the child's clothing to help dissipate heat, ensuring adequate hydration, giving lukewarm baths, and using cooling patches to lower body temperature.
