On the 11th, during a "whale hunting" exercise conducted by the Navy's Hai Lung submarine off the coast of Zuoying, a training torpedo without explosives was launched and mysteriously disappeared. After four days of air and sea searches, no trace was found. The Navy issued a press release asking fishermen to assist in the search, even offering a NT$30,000 reward. Upon hearing the news, fishermen criticized the move, arguing that their boats' sonar equipment is not professional enough and that asking them to retrieve the torpedo is essentially playing with lives.
The Navy's Hai Lung submarine was conducting a torpedo test-firing exercise off Zuoying on the 11th when a training torpedo vanished after launch. The Navy then issued a press release, treating it like a lost pet, and called on nearby vessels to help locate the missing torpedo.
A NT$30,000 reward was offered to encourage nearby fishing boats to assist. However, fishermen shook their heads in disbelief upon hearing the news, condemning the Navy for putting their lives at risk by asking them to search for the torpedo.
Seven years ago, during the Han Kuang exercises, the Navy's Hai Lung submarine also lost a torpedo during a test firing. Now, history has repeated itself. Although the military emphasized that the missing torpedo was unarmed and only for training purposes—posing no explosive risk—the decision to offer a NT$30,000 reward for fishermen to help locate it while out at sea, instead of relying on the Navy's professional equipment, left the public stunned.
