A Chinese spouse who had undergone five induced abortions was unable to conceive again for over a decade. After examination at Changhua City's Boyuan Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, it was discovered that her uterus had severe adhesions, dividing it into two halves. Dr. Cai Fengbo stated that he had never seen such severe uterine adhesions before, which were likely related to multiple poorly performed abortions.

Dr. Cai Fengbo explained that the uterus is normally a simple, open space, resembling an empty air-raid shelter. However, during a pre-IVF evaluation for a Chinese spouse with blocked fallopian tubes, a hysteroscopy revealed severe uterine adhesions that had unusually divided the uterus into two halves. At first glance, it appeared to be a case of double uterus.

Dr. Cai noted that the 31-year-old Chinese spouse had undergone five induced abortions in China when she was younger. During the fifth abortion, the fetus was more developed, and after an injection failed to induce labor, a termination surgery was performed. Since that surgery, she had been unable to conceive for over a decade, and her menstrual flow had gradually decreased. He deduced that the abortion surgery had damaged the uterine wall, leading to tissue adhesion and hyperplasia that divided the uterus into two chambers.

Dr. Cai pointed out that the uterus is where fertilized eggs implant. When adhesions form in the uterus, they can hinder implantation, causing infertility or even recurrent miscarriages. Therefore, he first performed surgery to remove the adhesions in this woman's uterus before proceeding with IVF, and she has now successfully reached 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Dr. Cai emphasized that uterine adhesions are closely related to induced abortions and uterine surgeries such as cesarean sections, fibroid removals, or pelvic inflammatory diseases like endometritis. Women must exercise caution in such matters.
