A batch of Coca-Cola ZERO PM imported from mainland China was found to contain preservatives in its concentrate! According to domestic regulations, this type of preservative is not allowed in carbonated beverages, and the detected levels were more than twice the standard. Coca-Cola stated that the non-compliant batch had been intercepted at customs and was not imported, so the public need not worry excessively.

Marketed as zero calories, this low-calorie drink is popular among young women. However, a 2-kilogram batch of Coca-Cola concentrate from Shanghai was found to contain methylparaben. Shockingly, it contained three types of preservatives, all exceeding the standard by at least two times.

Dr. Lin Jieliang, Director of the Department of Toxicology at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, said, "Why would a carbonated beverage contain three types of preservatives? It suggests that this low-calorie drink is highly prone to spoilage. European researchers believe it may be linked to breast cancer." Methylparaben is a preservative and also a fragrance. Taiwan's Department of Health prohibits its use in carbonated beverages, as it is primarily used in cosmetics and is highly irritating.

Although the batch containing three preservatives was intercepted at customs and did not enter Taiwan, the company explained that methylparaben is legal in China and the issue arose due to a distribution error. However, as a well-known beverage manufacturer, the discovery of not only excessive preservatives but three types at once has understandably caused public concern.
