Everyone knows that painkillers can relieve pain, but could they also enhance memory? A recent Swedish study found that taking acetaminophen-based painkillers may help reduce stress and improve memory. Epidemiological studies also suggest that frequent painkiller users are less likely to develop dementia. However, subsequent experiments have failed to confirm these findings. Domestic doctors caution that the effects still need verification, and such painkillers may harm the liver—so don’t abuse them just to boost memory.

Many cold and pain relief medications contain acetaminophen to achieve analgesic and antipyretic effects. But beyond pain relief, the latest Swedish study found that dementia patients who took this type of painkiller for eight consecutive weeks showed a 17% reduction in agitation.

It is speculated that the drug stimulates serotonin in the brain, leading to stress relief and memory enhancement. However, domestic doctors remain skeptical. Dr. He Yicheng: "There is currently no evidence linking such painkillers to mood or memory."

The main issue is the lack of large-scale studies to confirm these effects. Moreover, these painkillers have side effects, such as liver damage, and should not be misused. Doctors advise that, for example, with a 500mg pill, one should not exceed six pills a day. Dr. He Yicheng: "It affects the liver's detoxification system, increasing the liver's burden. Overdosing may even lead to hepatitis or liver failure."

Trying to boost brainpower and memory with painkillers? Be careful not to sacrifice your health in the process.
