Lin Guanzhen, Director of the Food and Drug Management Division of the New Taipei City Health Bureau, stated on the 16th that a recent inspection of 20 dried tofu products sold in markets found that as many as 9 failed to meet regulations, with a violation rate as high as 45%. Among the 9 non-compliant products, 5 were found to contain bactericides, 4 contained Metanil Yellow (an industrial dye), and 1 even had excessive levels of preservatives.
Lin Guanzhen pointed out that manufacturers violating regulations by using bactericides and preservatives will be fined between NT$30,000 and NT$150,000 in accordance with Article 12 and Article 33 of the Food Sanitation Management Act. Meanwhile, manufacturers illegally using "Metanil Yellow" will face fines ranging from NT$60,000 to NT$6 million under Article 11, Paragraph 1, Item 3, and Article 31 of the same law.
Lin Guanzhen noted that consuming hydrogen peroxide may cause irritation and skin stinging symptoms, while long-term excessive intake of benzoic acid can lead to loss of appetite and liver damage. Additionally, some unscrupulous businesses add industrial dye Metanil Yellow to enhance the color of dried tofu and improve its appearance. However, Metanil Yellow is prohibited in food products, and long-term excessive consumption may cause liver cell damage and hepatitis. Consumers are advised to choose reputable vendors and avoid purchasing dried tofu products that appear overly bright or white. Before cooking, soaking or rinsing the product thoroughly with water can help reduce exposure to excessive or illegal food additives, ensuring personal safety.
