Dr. Qiu Xianxue, who has dedicated himself to stroke prevention, suffered a stroke in his own hospital three years ago and successfully performed acupuncture on himself to save his life. Having walked this difficult path, the once workaholic has since embraced a slower-paced life.
The Kaohsiung Stroke Patients Association was officially established today. Dr. Qiu Xianxue, an attending physician in the acupuncture and traumatology department of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Division at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, shared his personal experience, urging people to seize the golden window for stroke emergency treatment.
At 43, Qiu Xianxue transitioned from Western neurology to the field of traditional Chinese acupuncture, devoting his youth to researching stroke prevention through both Western and Chinese medicine. Despite immersing himself in stroke research, he could not escape its grasp.
On the afternoon of February 25, 2009, Qiu Xianxue, who had dedicated his career to stroke prevention, never imagined he would suffer a stroke himself. While rushing to a meeting at the hospital’s stroke center, he suddenly collapsed in the corridor on the third floor of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Children’s Hospital. His right arm and leg immediately became unresponsive, leaving him unable to even pick up his phone to call for help.
“At that moment, a thought flashed through my swollen brain—I’m having a stroke!” Qiu Xianxue recalled the incident with lingering fear.
He described feeling numbness in the back of his scalp, which quickly spread to the periphery of his vision. The right side of his body gradually lost sensation and strength.
Leaning against the wall, Qiu Xianxue used his left hand to take out an acupuncture needle he always carried with him and inserted it into the "Qiangjian point" at the center of the back of his head. Instantly, his right hand regained sensation, allowing him to pick up his phone and call for help. He then limped to the hospital’s emergency room for treatment.
Thanks to his prompt self-treatment and immediate medical attention, Qiu Xianxue was discharged after six days of hospitalization and returned to work just ten days after the stroke. Four months later, he traveled to Beijing for a conference and even climbed the Great Wall, fully recovering to his pre-stroke condition.
He said he was fortunate that his ischemic stroke occurred in the hospital, where colleagues quickly assisted him. Combined with his knowledge of acupuncture and ongoing rehabilitation, he recovered swiftly.
After this brief but life-altering experience, Qiu Xianxue’s outlook changed. His once chaotic lifestyle became orderly and slow-paced. He also gained deeper empathy for stroke patients and the obstacles they face.
“I never expected such a short journey to bring such a profound change to my life,” Qiu Xianxue said, hoping to share his experience to encourage more patients and their families not to miss the golden window for stroke treatment, which is crucial for recovery.
Qiu Xianxue explained that in the days leading up to his stroke, he had stayed up late finishing reports, rushed to meetings and consultations early in the morning, and endured several sleepless nights due to exhaustion and extreme stress—factors that contributed to his stroke.
He also noted that stroke recurrence rates are high and urged patients to slow down, prioritize sufficient sleep, maintain a healthy diet and exercise, and manage stress to enjoy a slower, more mindful life.1011006
