According to statistics from the Department of Health, the number of dialysis patients in Taiwan has officially exceeded 60,000, with approximately 6,000 patients registered on the waiting list for kidney transplants. However, there are only about 200 kidney donors in the country each year, meaning dialysis patients often have to wait several years for a kidney.

(Wen Lankui reports)

Dialysis patients must undergo hemodialysis treatment at the hospital three days a week. While there is no immediate life-threatening risk, their quality of life is severely impacted, often preventing them from traveling far. As a result, many dialysis patients hope for the opportunity to receive a kidney transplant.

Dr. Chen Yanda from the kidney transplant team at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital noted that there are currently about 6,000 to 7,000 patients nationwide waiting for a kidney transplant, but only around 200 kidney donors each year. "According to this year's statistics from the Department of Health, the number of dialysis patients in Taiwan has officially surpassed 60,000. This is a significant warning sign for Taiwan's medical community and society. Currently, there are 6,000 to 7,000 patients awaiting transplants, but only about 200 can receive a kidney transplant each year."

Dr. Chen Yanda pointed out that the average annual cost for a dialysis patient is about NT$500,000. With 60,000 dialysis patients nationwide, the total annual dialysis expenses amount to NT$30 billion, accounting for approximately 14% to 15% of the total National Health Insurance expenditure.

Dr. Chen further explained that, on average, dialysis patients live about 10 years less than those who receive kidney transplants. Typically, doctors recommend that dialysis patients under the age of 40 register for a chance at a kidney transplant. While public awareness of organ donation has improved, there is still room for progress.
