The population suffering from osteoporosis and depression is increasing year by year. Research has found that these two diseases interact with each other, and exercise is the best prescription for preventing both.
Fan Peizhen, an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at Yangming University, pointed out that the "Harvard Women's Health Watch" published in January this year recommended that women who have been or are currently undergoing treatment for depression should discuss with their doctors whether they need a bone density test.
Zhao Xiangtai, director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Laboratory at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, said that a study conducted by the hospital's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology on 450 menopausal women found that 23% of these participants, with an average age of 54, suffered from depression, and 25% suffered from osteoporosis. Among the depression patients, 36% had mild osteoporosis, and more than 20% met the criteria for osteoporosis.
Zhao Xiangtai explained that this study shows that menopausal women with depression are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis, and the more severe the osteoporosis, the more severe the depression. However, factors leading to osteoporosis such as height, weight, and body mass index did not show a correlation with depression.
Fan Peizhen said that osteoporosis often goes unnoticed until problems arise. The best way to prevent it is to exercise more, especially aerobic exercise, which not only increases bone density but is also the best prescription for treating mild depression.
