Nephrologists point out that the nutritional injections available in the market contain seven or eight types of drugs, including anti-inflammatory, painkillers, garlic extract, and sugar water. These injections enter the bloodstream directly, bypassing liver metabolism and placing the entire metabolic burden on the kidneys, thereby increasing kidney load. Clinically, there are frequent cases of patients developing chronic kidney failure due to receiving such injections.

Dr. Jiang Shoushan, Director of Nephrology at Shin Kong Hospital, noted that they often encounter elderly patients who develop chronic kidney failure from receiving injections. Typically, family members notice persistent swelling in the face and body that does not subside, prompting them to seek medical attention.

Dr. Yang Huangyu, a nephrologist at Chang Gung Hospital, explained that while general nutritional injections are harmless to the body, many such injections contain complex added medications. If anti-inflammatory or painkiller drugs are included, they may harm the kidneys.

Dr. Jiang Shoushan added that when food is ingested through the digestive tract, it is metabolized by the liver before entering the systemic circulation. However, when substances are injected directly into the bloodstream, the kidneys bear the full burden of metabolism, which can strain the kidneys.

Dr. Jiang also mentioned that the Wanhua District in Taipei is an area where such injections are commonly administered. Additionally, the practice is even more prevalent in central and southern Taiwan. Many patients transferred from the south quickly progress to requiring dialysis.

While occasional injections are generally harmless for most people, patients with conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or kidney disease face a greater burden from such injections and should exercise extra caution.
