A small study may surprise many about the amount of chemicals they are exposed to through everyday household items. Researchers say consumers need to be more aware of indoor pollution.
Dr. Rebecca Gasior Altman from Tufts University tested 25 women for various environmental pollutants in their homes and bodies, finding that most were surprised by the pollutants they were exposed to in their home environments.
These 25 individuals were part of a larger study conducted by the Silent Spring Institute, which tested their homes and urine for 89 environmental pollutants, including chemicals from pesticides, plastics, detergents, and cosmetics.
The results showed that each participant was found to be contaminated with an average of 20 chemicals. Many were unaware of the potential health impacts of these chemicals encountered through daily household items. However, some chemicals, such as phthalates and bisphenol A found in plastic products, have been shown in animal studies to potentially affect hormones and increase the risk of certain cancers.
