Researchers today stated that a type of loose, heat-generating fat found in newborns is more common in adults than previously thought. This discovery could lead to new weight-loss methods.
So-called brown fat, once activated by cold temperatures, burns calories faster than regular fat. Since brown fat in adults is generally in a dormant state, opinions vary on how much—or even whether—adults possess it.
Three studies to be published tomorrow in the *New England Journal of Medicine* report that brown fat can be found in most adults. The researchers also discovered that exposing the body to cold temperatures can detect brown fat. In some cases, adults with more active brown fat regions tended to be leaner.
The current hope is that if a method can be found to activate this brown fat and stimulate the body to produce more of it, people could burn extra calories without additional exercise.
Dr. Aaron Cypress of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, who led one of the studies, said in an interview: "Fifty grams of the most active brown fat accounts for 20% of calorie expenditure at rest." "If you add it all up, that’s equivalent to 400 or 500 calories a day."
He added, "Practically speaking, we may very well develop new treatments for diabetes and obesity." Central News Agency (Translation)
