Researchers from the United States and Canada say that men's investment behavior can be influenced by a woman's touch. A simple pat on the back from a woman can make men lose control and make reckless investments.

To understand men's resistance to a woman's touch, researchers had men participate in an investment game. They prepared two types of investment options: a low-yield but stable fund and high-risk stocks. They also enlisted both male and female financial advisors. When the test subjects arrived, some were greeted by male advisors, while others were welcomed by female advisors. The greeting methods were divided into three types: a nod, a handshake, or a pat on the back.

The results showed that men greeted by male advisors—whether with a nod, handshake, or pat on the back—were unaffected in their investment decisions. If female advisors merely nodded, the male investors could still remain rational. However, once they shook hands with a female advisor, their restraint vanished—they became bolder and were more likely to invest in riskier stocks, often with amounts twice as large as when dealing with male advisors. If they received a light pat on the back from a female advisor, they became even more daring, investing three times the amount in stocks.

Psychologists explain that, as children, men are mostly cared for by their mothers and frequently receive their touch. Children who experience maternal touch tend to feel more secure and, consequently, are more willing to take risks.
