The Taipei City Government spends up to NT$1.64 billion annually on bonuses for retired public servants and teachers, sparking controversy. City councilors further revealed today that venues such as the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the zoo, and the astronomical museum—all city-run facilities—have long allowed retired civil servants free entry without any legal basis. The councilors sarcastically questioned whether retired laborers should also enjoy the same benefits.
Visitors to Taipei’s city-run venues will notice notices at the entrances detailing free admission eligibility. While those over 65 or with disabilities qualify without issue, why are those with "veteran IDs or public servant retirement certificates" also granted free entry?
Councilors are outraged, as Taipei already spends NT$1.64 billion each year on bonuses for retired public servants and teachers. Yet, for years, 13 city-run venues, including the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the zoo, and the science museum, have provided free or discounted admission to retired civil servants. What’s worse, these exclusive benefits for retired public servants lack any legal justification.
The city government has never even tracked how many retired public servants have enjoyed these free privileges. Now, under scrutiny, officials have pledged to review and cancel the preferential policy to avoid further controversy.
