Former Health Minister Yang Zhiliang, who has recently drawn attention for his continuous criticism of the Ma administration, reiterated today (19th) that public sentiment should be harnessed. He argued that the 18% preferential interest rate and year-end bonuses for retired civil servants should be abolished, stating, "Public sentiment is a force to be reckoned with. Better to have a change of ruling parties than to lose the country."
On the 18th, Yang criticized the Ma administration for its governance failures, pointing out its persistent push to raise insurance premiums and tax rates. He noted not only the countless corrupt officials but also the excessive number of unused public facilities ("mosquito halls") and the frequent scandals involving self-enrichment at CPC Corporation and Taipower. Without addressing these issues of misused funds, he said, the public naturally feels the government is only interested in extracting money and oppressing workers.
Yang further lambasted the Ministry of Finance as the worst government agency, accusing it of "failing to reduce taxes where it should and slashing them recklessly where it shouldn’t." He condemned former finance ministers Lee Sush-der and Chang Sheng-fo as "the worst ministers in history."
When pressed by the media today about his remarks, Yang emphasized again that "public sentiment is a force to be reckoned with." He believes the current 18% preferential deposit rate and the year-end bonus system for retired civil servants should be abolished, reiterating, "Better to have a change of ruling parties than to lose the country."
Yang added that the government should revise unreasonable laws and regulations, stating, "Although finances are tight, that doesn’t justify constantly taking money from the people."
