The U.S. Census Bureau released a report today indicating that minorities, who currently make up about one-third of the U.S. population, are expected to become the majority by 2042; by 2050, minorities will account for 54% of the U.S. population.
According to the report, the U.S. population will grow from the current approximately 305 million to 400 million by 2039; by 2050, it will reach 439 million. The U.S. will become more racially and ethnically diverse, and the population will age.
By 2050, the white population is expected to slightly increase from the current approximately 199.8 million to 203.3 million, with its proportion of the population decreasing from 66% to 46%.
The Hispanic population is expected to grow from the current approximately 46.7 million to 132.8 million, with its proportion of the total population significantly increasing from 15% to about 30%.
The Asian population is also expected to grow from the current approximately 15.5 million to 40.6 million, with its proportion of the U.S. population increasing from 5.1% to 9.2%.
Although the black population will grow, the proportion will change little, expected to increase from the current 14% to 15%.
The report also points out that by 2023, more than half of the U.S. child population will be minorities. By 2030, when the post-war baby boomers reach over 65 years old, about one in five Americans will be over 65.
From 2008 to 2050, the population over 65 years old will grow at more than double the rate to 88.5 million; the population over 85 years old will grow at more than triple the rate to 19 million. 970814
