A Canadian study found that because roads are fraught with dangers and fatal accidents can happen at any time, drivers lose an average of 20 minutes of their lifespan for every hour spent behind the wheel.
According to the Canadian Press, the study, published in the *Medical Decision Making* journal, used complex traffic computer models to compare the relationship between drivers' lifespans and car accidents. It concluded that speeding leads to accidents, which in turn shortens drivers' lives.
Dr. Donald Redelmeier of Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital, who led the study, explained that when drivers speed up to reach their destination faster, the time saved is offset by the increased risk of accidents. Often, haste makes waste, resulting in even greater time loss.
Redelmeier stated that driving for one hour reduces lifespan by 20 minutes. While most drivers are completely unaware of this, it is a real phenomenon. In the U.S. and Canada alone, approximately 45,000 people die in traffic accidents each year (42,000 in the U.S. and around 3,000 in Canada).
