Everyone knows that walking helps slim the waistline, but now new research has found that walking can also make you smarter.

The UK's "Daily Mail" reports that there's no need to speed up your walking pace—just taking leisurely walks a few times a week can not only improve fitness but also sharpen the mind.

American researchers point out that walking for 40 minutes at a comfortable pace three times a week can enhance intelligence.

Scientists say that moderate walking strengthens brain circuit connections, prevents age-related cognitive decline, and even improves reasoning abilities.

Psychologists at the University of Illinois in the U.S. studied brain scan data from nearly 100 self-admitted couch potatoes and found that, compared to those who only did stretching exercises, those who walked several times a week showed significant cognitive improvement after a year.

Lead researcher Professor Art Kramer said earlier studies found that exercise enhances the function of specific brain structures.

But this latest research shows that even gentle exercise can improve the coordination of important brain networks. (Translator: Central News Agency, Chang Hsiao-wen) 990828
