A recent investigation by print media has found that daily-use products like shampoo and facial cleansers contain preservatives, which may be the culprits behind eczema reactions. The report indicates that nearly 50% of hair care products on the market contain two types of preservatives, MI and MCI. Even baby bath products, generally considered the safest and mildest, are no exception. While international standards for these preservatives were established eight years ago, Taiwan will only announce its own limits next month.
When visiting a salon for styling, washing hair is always a must. However, the shampoo, facial cleansers, or body lotions you use may contain preservatives that could trigger allergies or eczema, according to a self-conducted investigation by print media. Dermatologist Wang Guoxian explains, "These are MCI and MI, ingredients commonly used by both international and domestic brands."
On product packaging, ingredients starting with "M"—MI and MCI—are preservatives. Due to their heat-resistant and antibacterial properties, they are often added to cleaning products. Dr. Wang notes, "For people with sensitive skin, these can cause rashes, blisters, or dryness and itching." Although rinse-off products have short contact time with the skin, about 10% of users may still experience allergic reactions.
Ye Minggong, Director of the Food and Drug Administration, stated, "Preservative-related data is extensive. We are systematically organizing it before officially listing the standards." Contact eczema is increasingly common, causing red, patchy skin. With countless allergens—especially unlabeled preservative levels—Taiwan lags behind Europe and the U.S. by eight years in setting limits, leaving the public exposed to daily allergy risks.
