The scalp thrives in a mildly acidic environment, but a survey reveals that 40% of commercially available shampoos do not fall within the ideal pH range of 4.5-6.0 for the scalp. Some shampoos even exceed pH 7, making them alkaline. Dermatologists warn that alkaline shampoos can cause scalp itching and stinging, promote the growth of Malassezia fungi (which leads to dandruff), and may even trigger dermatitis or hair loss.

Dr. Zhao Zhaoming, chairman of the Chinese Aesthetic and Hair Health Education Association, explains that a healthy scalp has a protective sebum film formed by a mix of sweat and oils, typically with a pH around 5.5. If the scalp feels dry and tight after washing, it’s often due to harsh alkaline cleansers. Zhao commissioned Taiwan-America Testing Company to examine 17 anti-dandruff, dandruff-removing, and oil-control shampoos, finding that 40% fell outside the mildly acidic pH 4.5-6.0 range.

Zhao warns that long-term use of alkaline shampoos can disrupt the scalp’s natural pH balance. Over-stripping oils may weaken the scalp’s barrier, making it more sensitive to external irritants. Consumers should opt for shampoos close to pH 5.5—those that leave the scalp clean but not dry are ideal.
