Abstract

In management, there is a saying: "Direction is more important than speed." Similarly, in the prevention and treatment of cancer, "direction is more important than medical skill." Because whether cancer is a friend or an enemy depends on the direction and the essence.

Everything in the world has its cause and effect, and cancer is no exception. As Buddhism wisely states: "To know the causes of the past, look at the present; to know the results of the future, look at the present actions." Similarly, from the perspective of the "Chinese Natural Therapy Medicine" established by Dr. Chen Chouyi, the occurrence and prevention of any disease (including cancer) cannot escape the natural law of cause and effect.

If people fail to recognize the natural law that "results arise from the convergence of causes and conditions" or "results cease when causes and conditions are severed," and focus only on whether the tumor is eradicated or whether cancer cells still exist in the prevention and treatment of cancer, they may end up not with "the disappearance of the tumor," but with "the disappearance of the person."
At the beginning, human nature is good. Similarly, at the beginning, cancer's nature is good.

Cells long subjected to a poor environment, enduring both "internal and external hardships," have only two paths to take:
1. Die (apoptosis).
2. Change their survival mechanisms to adapt (endure adversity), or continue to live in a harsh environment in a harsh manner.

Therefore, cancer is a friend in dire need of help, not an enemy. Help it, and try not to harm it.

Introduction

Sun Tzu's Art of War states: "Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will never be defeated; know the heavens and know the earth, and victory will be complete." Do people today truly "know themselves and know their enemy" and "know the heavens and know the earth" in the prevention and treatment of cancer? Personally, I believe that people today often neither know themselves nor their enemy; neither the heavens nor the earth. Because,

Firstly: People rarely reflect on themselves, often harming cells due to personal desires, and always viewing cancer cells (abused cells) as enemies, likening them to demons.
Secondly: For personal gain, humans have ravaged the natural world, leaving it "scarred," making sunlight, air, and water increasingly unfavorable to humans.
Thirdly: The various pollutions suffered by the earth, the crops grown, and the livestock raised with poor feed and methods are increasingly unsuitable for human consumption.

Whether in the medical field or among the general public, there are widespread fundamental misconceptions or biases, not recognizing that tumors are victims, the aggrieved. Despite suffering from the harsh and toxic internal and external environments, they still strive to contain the harmful factors within the body, allowing the body to barely maintain normal physiological functions. Therefore, Dr. Chen Chouyi, the founding president of the World Federation of Chinese Natural Therapy, once said with deep emotion: "Cancer has no crime deserving death, but has the merit of saving lives."

Is cancer a friend or an enemy? It depends on people's understanding of it, whether they truly understand its essence, and how they face it.

1. "Benevolent Governance" or "Tyranny"

Currently, the world's population is about 6.5 billion, living in 237 countries and regions. Each country has its own set of governance policies, and although each country has its own way of governance, from the history of humanity both ancient and modern, we can categorize them into two major types: tyranny, such as the dictatorial and brutal rule of Nazi Germany's Hitler; and benevolent governance, such as the people-loving governance of U.S. President Roosevelt.

Tyranny, internally: harsh labor and severe punishments, exorbitant taxes and levies, making life unbearable for the people; externally: invading and plundering lands, forcibly seizing and robbing, causing widespread suffering and devastation.Benevolent governance, internally: close governance and love for the people, promoting education and flourishing industries, leading to prosperous people and a stable nation; externally: fostering good relations with neighbors, aiding the weak and assisting the poor, resulting in world peace.

It is often said: "A person is a small universe." This statement is true, as the human body is composed of approximately 60 trillion cells, which we might as well call the "Cellular Republic." Whether a person will suffer from "cancer" depends on how the president (yourself) of this vast "Cellular Republic" governs these 60 trillion cellular citizens.

For the "Cellular Republic," there can also be "benevolent governance" and "tyranny":

Tyranny, internally: restless and irritable, full of desires; willful and stubborn, leading to stagnation of qi and blood stasis, etc. Externally: striving for fame and profit, harming others (cells) for self-interest (president), irregular daily routines, uncontrolled diet, excessive indulgence in lust, etc.

Benevolent governance, internally: calm and peaceful, clear-minded and with few desires; self-respect and self-love, naturally leading to smooth qi and blood flow, etc. Externally: balanced work and rest, sociable and generous, regular daily routines, controlled diet, moderate indulgence in lust, etc.

I ask all readers and esteemed presidents of the Cellular Republic, how do you lead your Cellular Republic?

In management, there is a very important concept: "Direction is more important than speed." Similarly, in the prevention and treatment of cancer, can we say that "concept is more important than medical skill"? To be clear, if your direction is to meticulously kill "cancer cells," then your medical skill naturally involves using toxic methods.

As the saying goes: "Policy errors are more terrifying than corruption." Similarly, negative emotions, concepts, poor lifestyles, or medical deviations and errors, are they not more terrifying than murder?

1. "Cancer" Candidates

People are often confused or constantly anxious due to some seemingly plausible statistical data. For example, statistics show that "in Taiwan, about one in four people will develop cancer in their lifetime," and "in the United States, it will be as severe as one in two people having a chance to develop cancer." Yes, all statistical data are obtained through objective scientific methods. But, esteemed readers, when will it be your turn? Are we supposed to play a game of lining up and counting, and whoever is counted as four or two should consider themselves unlucky? In fact, regardless of the statistics, each of us is a 'cancer' candidate.

As early as 1960, according to the theory of Nobel Prize winner in Physiology, Sir F. Macfarlane Burnet: " A normal person produces about 100,000 cancer cells every day, but the immune system of most people can effectively destroy these cancer cells. " Research also indicates that among patients who died from non-"cancer" causes, autopsy statistics show that about 22% of patients had malignant tumors that were not detected during their lifetime. The Geneva Medical School also conducted autopsies on 280 death cases, with an average age of 75, and found that 48% of people had 1 to 3 malignant tumors in their bodies; the famous Japanese Kin Gin sisters, after their death, doctors found that they had various cancer cells in their bodies, and they had no symptoms or were diagnosed with tumors during their lifetime. This means that if a person lives to 120 years old, they will definitely coexist with cancer cells. It can be seen that the production of cancer cells is a normal physiological phenomenon, and how to maintain the dynamic balance of the internal environment is the key to whether the disease occurs. Here, we can still use the metaphor of the "Cell Republic" to think: in any well-governed nation, whether ancient or modern, Chinese or foreign, there are always a few individuals who "break the rules" or "commit misdeeds." It's natural that the policies of the "president" may not satisfy or gain the approval of every citizen, leading to some dissenters. However, as long as the rulers love their people as their own children, govern diligently and honestly, and enforce laws fairly, a good social environment can certainly balance out the few bad elements or dissenters, making them "small fish that can't stir big waves" or "weeds among hemp that straighten themselves without support," ensuring national peace and prosperity. Conversely, if it's a "tyranny," it will inevitably lead to "the people rebelling against the officials," eventually causing a "nationwide rebellion."

Therefore, since we know from physiology that everyone has some degree of cell mutation every day, there's no need to obsess over a few cancer cells. The key is whether you treat them with "tyranny" or "benevolent governance." If you govern with "tyranny," you are the "cancer" candidate; if you govern with "benevolent governance," at most, you are just a cancer candidate.

Remember, those who win the "people" thrive, and those who lose the "people" perish.

2. Are 80% of cancer patients scared to death?

"Martin Gardner, a famous American psychologist and former doctor, strongly opposed telling cancer patients the truth. He believed that among the 6.3 million Americans who died of cancer, 80% were scared to death" (excerpted from the Houston "Southern News" on August 13, 2003). A renowned radiologist in Taiwan once said: "One-third of cancer patients are scared to death, one-third are killed by medical treatment, and one-third are destined to die."

Both statements make sense and deeply reflect the current situation or outcome of mainstream medical cancer treatment.

A young leukemia (blood cancer) hero in Taipei wrote in his "Anti-Cancer Diary": "Chemotherapy is a big assassin, stabbing every corner of my body... Radiation therapy is a little devil, attacking every vital part of my body..." A famous music critic in Taipei, who suffered from lung cancer that later metastasized to bone cancer, told me: "During radiotherapy, I felt my bone marrow sizzling..." A retired general with lymphoma told me: "I am a soldier, and now I am over 70 years old. Death is nothing to fear. But I don't want to suffer."

Perhaps some might say that with better medical technology and more advanced medical care, there should be nothing to fear about "fighting cancer." Unfortunately, taking the late Japanese Emperor Showa as an example, who suffered from pancreatic cancer blocking his duodenum, his doctors performed a highly complex bypass anastomosis to ensure his digestive tract functioned normally after surgery. However, less than a year later, the emperor was hospitalized again due to vomiting blood. Upon examination, it was found that the tumor had recurred but not metastasized. Due to severe vomiting of blood, he received a total of 30,000cc of blood transfusions, almost ten times his total blood volume. Despite receiving the most luxurious and attentive care and the most advanced medical technology, he still suffered greatly and ultimately could not be saved.

Former U.S. President Kennedy's wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, suffered from lymphoma and passed away half a year after several rounds of chemotherapy. Former U.S. Vice President Senator Humphrey, who suffered from bladder cancer, first underwent radiation therapy. In May 1976, his doctor, Dabney Jarman, excitedly declared that the radiation therapy was successful, and co-authored a book with the vice president of the American Cancer Association, calling Humphrey a "notable beneficiary of modern radiation therapy." However, just a few months later, the cancer recurred, and it was more severe than before. He was immediately sent to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York for surgery. Afterwards, his doctor, Willard Whitmore, announced at a national press conference: "The senator has been cured." Humphrey then underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and passed away less than a year later. The entire process was filled with immense suffering and torment, which is difficult for outsiders to fully comprehend. The medical community, however, does not publicize these realities.

It is evident that whether you are a common laborer or a high-ranking official, once you embark on the path of "allopathic" (conventional) treatment, your fate is likely to be similar. Mainstream medicine considers cancer treatment successful if the patient survives for five years. However, people often overlook the fact that most patients struggle to survive even five years. And for those who do live beyond five years, how do they live? What is the quality of their life?

In reality, almost every cancer patient who undergoes mainstream medical treatment experiences similar suffering. They must endure all the side effects of the treatment, including mouth ulcers, bleeding gums, burns and ulcers in the esophagus and stomach lining, vomiting, loss of appetite, hair loss, purple nails, and exhaustion. Moreover, there is no guarantee of a cure. These treatment processes, akin to purgatorial torture, are undeniably terrifying.

In the United States, a survey was conducted among oncologists: "If you or your family member were diagnosed with cancer, would you choose the same treatment?" The result was that over 75% answered "No."

Therefore, if the approach to treating cancer remains confined to the mainstream methods of surgery (cutting), chemotherapy (poisoning), and radiation (burning)—the "allopathic" (lethal) approach—people are likely to be terrified not by the cancer itself, but by the horrifying treatment process or the grim outcomes.

Psychologist Martin Gardner's advocacy for withholding the truth from cancer patients may stem from humanitarian considerations. However, if one follows the "allopathic" (lethal) medical process, the truth will eventually come to light. No matter how strong one's willpower is, it is often difficult to withstand the ravages of "iatrogenic" and "drug-induced" illnesses. Few patients escape the fate of dying with regret.

There are three main reasons why modern medicine struggles to cure cancer:

1. Although a significant amount of pathology is understood, the treatments do not address the root cause of the disease. Instead, they only treat the symptoms, leading to a situation where "the wildfire cannot be extinguished, and it regrows with the spring breeze."

2. The methods and drugs used to treat cancer are not only ineffective but also harmful, exacerbating the underlying causes of the disease.

3. The focus of treatment is on the lesions and data (such as so-called cancer indices) rather than on the patient as a whole.

Therefore, if cancer is considered terrifying, it is perhaps more accurate to say that people's misconceptions and attitudes toward cancer are what is truly frightening, as they continue to view it as an enemy.Imagine if your child, upon merely disobeying you or "going astray," you could bear to, without any inquiry, regard them as an enemy and kill them to find relief?! Moreover, the destruction of natural ecosystems by modern civilization is terrifying; the methods of modern medicine in treating cancer are terrifying; the persistence of patients in bad living habits or their lack of self-reflection is terrifying; and the well-meaning "concerns" from all sides that leave patients confused and distressed are terrifying.

4. What exactly is "cancer"?

Before discussing the prevention and treatment of "cancer," it is appropriate to first clarify its name and pronunciation, which may help people better understand its true nature. The term Cancer, used by mainstream medicine to refer to malignant tumors, originates from Greek mythology. The great hero Heracles was battling the nine-headed water monster Hydra when the goddess Hera sent a crab (Karbinos) to ambush him, clamping onto Heracles' foot and refusing to let go, until the hero finally killed it. Out of sympathy, Hera elevated the crab to the sky, forming what is now known as the constellation Cancer (one of the twelve zodiac signs). Over 2,400 years ago, Hippocrates, the 'Father of Western Medicine' (460-377 B.C.), also described certain breast cancers as spreading outward, twisting, and resembling the shape of a crab, naming this type of disease 'Karbinoma,' which later evolved into the Latin terms Carcinoma or Cancer. At the same time, Hippocrates warned the medical community to consider the whole body when treating diseases. However, later generations may not have fully heeded the insights of their predecessors, observing only the pathological proliferation of cells out of order, their numbers multiplying like crab eggs, their appearance as "aggressive, fierce, and tenacious" as a crab (Cancer).

Why does mainstream medicine, which everywhere emphasizes empirical science, inappropriately name tumors after the superficial aspects of mythological tales?

Many people pronounce "cancer" as "ái," but its correct pronunciation should be "yán," indicating that the formation of cancer is closely related to tissue cells being in a state of inflammation for a long time. According to traditional Chinese medical theory: Qi stagnation leads to blood stasis, blood stasis leads to decay, decay leads to deterioration; ultimately resulting in the generation of deficient fire, fire boiling and salt steaming, Qi condensing into stones, stones piling into mountains, mountains collapsing into illness, which is cancer. In short, "excessive internal toxins, weakened vital energy" is its fundamental cause. As the saying goes, "A person must first disgrace themselves before others disgrace them," similarly, "A tree must first rot before insects are born, and the body must first deteriorate before cancer arises." Therefore, cells in a poor internal environment for a long time are forced to change their survival mechanisms (genetic mutations) to adapt to the adverse conditions. Dr. Morishita Keiichi from Japan pointed out: "The essence of cancer is the filth of the blood." From the perspective of natural medicine, "cancer is a chronic, systemic, degenerative (aging), blood-related, deficiency-related intoxication." (Excerpt from "The Miraculous Effects of Biomedical Science" P206, 1984, Taiwan, Professor Xi Leifeng) But based on years of personal observation and research, it should also include aspects of deterioration, emotional factors, and malevolent spirits (possession). It can also be said to be the ultimate comprehensive manifestation of various difficult and miscellaneous diseases. In short, cells in a poor environment for a long time often have the potential to become cancerous.

Therefore, the medical community and the general public should no longer refer to tumors as "cancer," but rather as "cancer disease." Because "symptom" refers to a phenomenon, while "disease" encompasses the overall cause, root, mechanism, and symptoms of the illness. The difference of a single character has led to nearly a century of deviation or error in the understanding, research, and treatment of "cancer." Hence, I boldly propose to rename "cancer" as "cancer disease."V. How to Respond

1. If it is chronic, it can be seen as a gradual accumulation over the years, leading from quantitative to qualitative changes, and then back to quantitative changes. Therefore, even if one contracts cancer, it mostly does not immediately threaten life. One can take it step by step, addressing it calmly.

2. If it is systemic, one should think holistically, face it comprehensively, and improve the overall situation (including the environment), rather than just dealing with it locally (such as through excision).

3. If it is degenerative (aging), one should identify the causes and conditions leading to the degeneration (aging) of internal organs and tissues. Using traditional Chinese medicine's syndrome differentiation and treatment or natural therapies, combined with dietary adjustments, moderate exercise, and an optimistic attitude towards life, one can resolve the adverse factors of degeneration (aging) or slow it down, thereby restoring vitality. This is preferable to burning the cancer and damaging the body's vital energy (as in radiation therapy).

4. If it is blood-related, one should start from the root by methods that cleanse, purify, and invigorate the blood, and promote blood production. This is better than directly poisoning the blood, which harms the body's normal cells and aims only to eradicate the cancer (as in chemotherapy).

5. If it is a deficiency-induced toxicity, one should eliminate the toxic factors and replenish what is lacking. This aligns with the traditional Chinese medicine principle of "supporting the righteous and eliminating the pathogenic," rather than "using poison to damage the righteous," which only exacerbates the problem.

6. If it is due to decay, one should start by eating organic foods low in oil, salt, protein, and sugar, adopting a mostly or entirely vegetarian diet, and eating less while drinking more (clean water and brown rice tea brewed with good water). Supplementing with various food enzymes and probiotics (such as lactic acid bacteria and EM) can reduce the burden on the spleen, stomach, and intestines, minimize the likelihood of food rotting in the intestines, and maintain a dominance of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Remember, the source of blood is the gastrointestinal tract. Japanese hematologist Dr. Morishita Keiichi proposed the theory of gastrointestinal hematopoiesis, and traditional Chinese medicine also holds that the spleen and stomach are the foundation of postnatal life. Therefore, without decay in the intestines, there is no production of turbid toxic blood, and without toxic blood, the main factors for cellular cancerization are unlikely to exist. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy not only fail to improve the body's decay but often worsen the internal environment.

7. If it is emotional, resorting to surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted therapy would be "missing the point." As the saying goes, "mental illness requires mental medicine."

8. If it is due to malevolent spirits (possession or karmic obstacles), one should deeply reflect and repent, seeking assistance or guidance from relevant spiritual masters.

9. From the standpoint of "treating the acute symptoms first" or "treating both the symptoms and the root cause when both are severe," I do not completely oppose necessary surgery or even appropriate chemotherapy and radiation therapy. However, it must be clear that one should first treat the person (strengthening the foundation and supporting the righteous to eliminate the pathogenic) before resorting to drastic measures to eliminate the cancer (treating the symptoms). Some believe that Western medicine's surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are also "eliminating the pathogenic" and are the best methods for treating symptoms. However, I believe that the essence of treating symptoms in traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine is fundamentally different.

Traditional Chinese medicine is based on syndrome differentiation and treatment, guiding according to the situation, and expelling pathogenic toxins, such as the "Da Cheng Qi Tang" for purging and detoxifying, or the "Shi Zao Tang" for expelling water and toxins. When used appropriately, these can cure the disease. Traditional Chinese medicine's treatment of symptoms often falls within the scope of eliminating pathogenic factors, such as clearing heat and detoxifying, moistening dryness and draining dampness, invigorating blood and resolving stasis, softening hardness and dissipating nodules, etc. Although it sometimes uses poison to combat poison, the true aim is to stimulate the body's self-healing power with mild or small doses of toxins (similar to Western homeopathy) or to expel pathogenic toxins. When it is necessary to use highly toxic substances, we adhere to the principles outlined in the "Huangdi Neijing" and the "Suwen: Wuchang Zheng Da Lun," which advocate: "For severe illnesses treated with highly toxic substances, eliminate sixty percent; for common illnesses treated with moderately toxic substances, eliminate seventy percent; for minor illnesses treated with mildly toxic substances, eliminate eighty percent; and for illnesses treated with non-toxic substances, eliminate ninety percent. Use grains, meat, fruits, and vegetables to nourish and fully recover, avoiding excess that could harm the body's vital energy." The toxicity of traditional Chinese medicine is natural and can naturally decompose and dissipate in the environment. As long as the diagnosis is accurate and the treatment is effective, there are rarely side effects.

In contrast, Western medicine often treats symptoms with drugs that are inherently toxic. While they may be effective in addressing the symptoms, they often leave behind side effects. The toxicity of Western drugs is mostly chemical, making it difficult for them to naturally decompose and dissipate, often polluting the environment and potentially causing drug-induced illnesses. Unfortunately, treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy must continue until no cancer cells are detected. By this point, the cancer cells may not be completely eradicated, but the patient may already be fatally weakened. It is no wonder that Dr. Liang Yunfei from the University of the Ryukyus in Japan stated, "Western medicine treats cancer with carcinogenic therapies."

In summary, when treating cancer (eliminating pathogens), whether through traditional Chinese medicine or Western medicine, it is crucial to also support the body's vital energy. Focusing solely on attacking the cancer without supporting the body's health can lead to a situation where "the disease is cured, but the patient's life is also lost."

### Conclusion

In conclusion, treating cancer should not be limited to simply attacking the cancer (through surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc.). The most important aspect is to detoxify the body and strengthen all bodily functions (natural healing power, or *medicatrix*) without harming the body, following the principles of natural harmony in theory, method, prescription, medicine, and diet. This approach allows the body to recover from weakness to strength, and from strength to normalcy, which is the path to long-term health and stability. Additionally, the patient's ability to thoroughly reflect, awaken, and be grateful, striving for "clear thinking, smooth bowel movements, and unobstructed qi and blood," will be the key foundation for recovery and well-being. Any disease (effect) must have its cause, and it also requires certain conditions (unfavorable internal and external factors) to manifest. Therefore, the true path of medicine lies in cutting off these conditions, eliminating the causes, and resolving the disease mechanism.

The above is based on my years of observation, research, and insights, now summarized in this article (for more details, see my book *Rehabilitating Cancer Cells*). I offer this for the reference of the medical community and the general public. Given my limited knowledge, I welcome any corrections or guidance from experts in the field.
