The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today notified approximately 30 manufacturers of caffeinated alcoholic beverages that they must prove the safety of such products.

The FDA stated that it had received a joint letter from 19 prosecutors expressing "concerns" about these beverages, asserting that mixing caffeine and alcohol is unsafe.

Mitchell Cheeseman, acting director of the Office of Food Additive Safety at the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, noted that caffeinated alcoholic beverages have long been "associated with risky behaviors... and sexual assault."

The FDA emphasized that it has "never approved the use of caffeine in alcoholic beverages at any level."

This marks the first time the FDA has required manufacturers to provide scientific evidence proving the safety of their products. Companies have 30 days to comply with this demand.

Major breweries Anheuser-Busch and Miller have already agreed to discontinue their production of functional alcoholic beverages such as Tilt, Bud Extra, and Sparks.

The FDA stated that if these beverages are found to be unsafe, it will "take appropriate action to ensure their removal from the market." (Translator: Central News Agency Chen Rong)
