Check toothpaste carefully before buying! After testing 27 toothpaste products on the market, the Consumers’ Foundation yesterday held a press conference announcing that two of them were found to contain the heavy metal aluminum. The foundation urged the government to quickly establish national standards for aluminum content in toothpaste.
The foundation stated that toothpaste abrasives often contain aluminum hydroxide (which can act as an antacid, providing acid resistance, hemostatic effects, and protecting ulcer surfaces). Although the government does not restrict its addition, since it enters the mouth, and aluminum is a heavy metal that may cause health effects such as dementia, anemia, and osteomalacia, it warrants attention.
The two products found to contain aluminum were Sunstar GUM Whitening Toothpaste, with levels exceeding 1000ppm, and Lion Fine-Floss Anti-Sensitive Toothpaste, which exceeded 100ppm. Lion Corporation stated that the formula was sourced from Japan’s Lion and contains minimal aluminum, primarily to prevent oral irritation. They are verifying with the Japanese side whether it causes side effects.
Taiwan Sunstar emphasized that the company had already sold off its toothpaste products and currently only produces plastic containers.
The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection responded that it is currently drafting national standards for toothpaste ingredient content. For diethylene glycol, which is used as a substitute for glycerin and has adverse effects on the human body, strict controls will be implemented. As for aluminum hydroxide, which is used in antacids, it is generally considered non-toxic internationally, and no content standards have been set. Whether it will be included in ingredient testing standards will be determined by the technical committee.
