Unscrupulous food products are already common in China, and now there's another addition—black fungus. According to an investigation by China Central Television (CCTV), some dishonest black fungus vendors use various unethical methods to increase the weight and improve the appearance of the product, all to earn an extra one or two yuan per kilogram, disregarding public health.
The CCTV investigation revealed that some vendors soak black fungus in ink and white glue mixed with sand particles before drying it. The treated fungus looks almost identical to regular black fungus, except for a darker color. Other vendors use chemical agents like magnesium sulfate to soak the fungus, causing it to expand. They then mix in small amounts of iron powder or asphalt before drying, causing impurities to firmly adhere to the surface of the fungus and increase its weight.
