[Hong Rongzhi / Tainan Report]

A 9-year-old fourth-grade elementary school girl in Tainan, who loved eating fatty meat and fried foods, and was frequently doted on by her grandparents with nourishing herbal soups and chicken broth, unexpectedly experienced her first menstrual period, alarming her parents. Doctors promptly treated her to delay the development of secondary sexual characteristics and prolong the closure of her growth plates, hoping to give her more time to grow taller.

Dr. Lin Yishou, a pediatrician at Sinlau Hospital, pointed out that during a bone age examination last year, the girl's bones were still very immature. He had specifically advised her mother to limit oily and overly nourishing foods and to return for follow-up within three to six months.

However, due to busy schoolwork, the mother neglected the follow-up. After entering fourth grade this year, the girl was shocked to discover red discharge while bathing one night and screamed in fright. The next day, her mother took her to the hospital, where an ultrasound confirmed it was her first period. Additionally, her bone age had suddenly advanced by one to two years.

Upon further inquiry, it was revealed that her grandparents had been doting on her over the past year, frequently preparing nourishing herbal soups and chicken broth. Combined with the girl's preference for fatty meat and fried foods, she had completely forgotten the doctor's earlier warning. Doctors quickly administered treatment to slow the development of her secondary sexual characteristics and extend the closure of her growth plates, maximizing her potential for height growth.

Dr. Lin explained that humans have two rapid growth periods: infancy and puberty. During these stages, girls typically grow 8 to 10 centimeters per year, while boys grow 10 to 12 centimeters. Although a child's height is largely influenced by their parents' stature, bone age examinations and treatments can help children grow taller.

Dr. Lin also noted that children can undergo bone age assessments as early as 6 to 8 years old for height evaluation. Before the growth plates close, it is crucial to seize the opportunity for optimal growth.
