Commercially available soy sauce has been found to contain the carcinogen "3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD)." The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Department of Health inspected 12 soy sauce products manufactured by Yi Jiang Food Co., Ltd., which had been reported, and found that as many as 9 of them exceeded the standard for "3-MCPD." The FDA has ordered the recall of non-compliant products, and failure to make improvements within the deadline may result in fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000.
The FDA explained that "3-MCPD" is naturally produced during the processing of soy sauce, depending on the oil content of the raw materials and temperature control during production. Although it poses a carcinogenic risk, it is still classified as an uncertain carcinogen. Currently, the Department of Health has established the "Hygienic Standard for 3-MCPD in Soy Sauce," stipulating that the "3-MCPD" content in soy sauce products should not exceed 0.4 ppm.
**Nine Yi Jiang Food Soy Sauce Products Exceed 3-MCPD Standards**
Following a media report, the FDA recently instructed the New Taipei City Health Bureau to conduct sampling at the manufacturer "Yi Jiang Food Co., Ltd." The test results released today revealed that nine products—including Shuang He Mild Spicy Sauce, Shang He Soy Sauce Paste, Fu Wei Xiang Soy Sauce, Shuang He Soy Sauce, Sheng Fa Oil Paste, Shuang He Soy Sauce Paste, Yi Jiang Oil Paste, Qiao Xiang Special Fish Sauce Soy Sauce, and Yu Fang Soy Sauce Paste—exceeded the 0.4 ppm limit for "3-MCPD." The highest levels were found in Qiao Xiang Special Fish Sauce Soy Sauce and Shuang He Mild Spicy Sauce, reaching 0.95 ppm and 0.94 ppm, respectively.
**Health Bureau Orders Full Suspension of All Soy Sauce Sales**
The New Taipei City Health Bureau stated that non-compliant products must be removed from shelves and recalled in accordance with Article 10 of the *Food Sanitation Management Act*. A total of 4,134 barrels of non-compliant soy sauce, amounting to 20,670 liters, have been recalled. Given that 75% of Yi Jiang Food's soy sauce products failed the inspection, the Health Bureau suspects that the company's soy sauce products may pose risks to consumer safety and health. It has ordered the company to suspend sales of all soy sauce products immediately and conduct a full recall. Failure to make improvements within the deadline may result in fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000.
The FDA stated that it will continue to supervise local health bureaus to strengthen inspections and urges businesses to implement self-management to ensure food safety for the public. Consumers are also advised to choose reputable brands and traditionally brewed soy sauce to reduce the risk of "3-MCPD" intake.Source:
