Eggs in Taipei were found to contain residues of veterinary drugs. A middleman surnamed Qiu claimed innocence, stating that they source their eggs from poultry farms and suspect cross-contamination may be the cause. They have temporarily halted purchases.
The Taipei City Health Bureau conducted inspections at supermarkets and department stores, detecting veterinary drug residues in eight batches of eggs, six of which originated from Changhua. The Changhua County Health Bureau and Animal Disease Control Center have since traced the sources of the eggs and imposed penalties based on the information provided by Taipei authorities.
One middleman surnamed Qiu, whose eggs were found to be problematic, said they received a notification about the issue with eggs supplied to supermarkets. In response, they have suspended purchases from the poultry farm and plan to wait for retesting results before restocking if the eggs meet safety standards.
Qiu explained that the detected drug residue levels were very low, suggesting that the contamination was likely not due to direct drug use but possibly from cross-contamination—such as containers previously holding veterinary drugs being reused for other chickens, leading to trace amounts being detected.
Qiu added that they intend to seek compensation from the poultry farm and will not resume purchases unless the farm provides a retest report confirming compliance with safety standards.
