As the weather heats up, convenience stores are launching soft-serve ice cream to capture the frozen dessert market. The Taipei City Health Bureau recently conducted hygiene inspections on soft-serve and regular ice cream sold at convenience stores and ice cream shops. Initial tests found two non-compliant samples, which have since been rectified after a deadline for improvement. The Health Bureau reminds the public that soft-serve ice cream ingredients include emulsifiers, thickeners, and flavorings, so claims like "natural" or "no additives" in advertisements are inappropriate. Additionally, one soft-serve ice cream with a "cone" contains about 200 calories. Since elementary school children consume around 2,000 calories daily, one soft-serve ice cream accounts for 10% of their daily caloric intake. (Reported by Lin Liyu)

Convenience stores and supermarkets are rolling out soft-serve ice cream to compete in the summer frozen dessert market, along with an increasing number of "specialty soft-serve shops," intensifying the ice cream market competition in Taipei. The Taipei City Health Bureau recently conducted a special inspection, sampling soft-serve and regular ice cream from convenience stores, ice cream shops, cafes, and fast-food restaurants. A total of 34 samples from 26 stores were tested, including 21 soft-serve and 13 regular ice cream products. Tests covered hygiene indicator bacteria (total bacterial count, coliforms, and E. coli) and sweeteners (saccharin and cyclamate). Results showed two products failed hygiene standards, prompting the Bureau to order corrective actions, which have since been completed. No false advertising was found in product promotions.

Inspections of bulk ingredient packaging also confirmed compliance with the new Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act, requiring full labeling of food additives, including water, sugar (sucrose), milk powder, butter, thickeners (carrageenan), emulsifiers (fatty acid glycerides), and flavorings (vanilla essence). The Bureau warns that since soft-serve ice cream contains emulsifiers, thickeners, and flavorings, claims like "natural" or "no additives" are misleading. Violations of advertising rules under Article 28, Paragraph 1 of the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act can result in fines of up to NT$4 million.

The Bureau also notes that one soft-serve ice cream with a cone contains about 200 calories, equivalent to an hour of brisk walking to burn off. For elementary school children with a daily intake of around 2,000 calories, one soft-serve accounts for 10% of their total daily calories. Parents are advised to monitor their children's consumption to avoid excessive calorie intake.
