After the gutter oil scandal erupted, many food businesses switched to Cheng I Food Co.'s oils. Unexpectedly, the Tainan District Prosecutors' Office discovered that Cheng I had mixed feed-grade oil with edible lard to produce refined oil products for sale, leading to multiple Cheng I oil products being implicated.
The Tainan District Prosecutors' Office stated that the affected Cheng I oil products include 2.4-liter and 18-liter "Wei Li Qing Xiang Oil," "Wei Li Fragrant Lard Oil," "Cheng I Fragrant Lard Oil," 15-kilogram barrel lard, 180-kilogram refined lard products, animal-based baking fats, and customized products.
Wu Ronghe, former director of Cheng I Food Co. (a subsidiary of the Ting Hsin Wei Chuan Group) and head of Xin Hao Enterprise Co., was detained and prohibited from meeting with others early this morning on suspicion of selling feed-grade oil labeled as edible lard to Cheng I for oil production.
**FDA: Retailers Must Remove Contaminated Cheng I Oil Products**
Chiang Yu-mei, Director-General of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, stated that the suspected feed-grade oil-mixed Cheng I oil products must not be shipped, and retailers must temporarily remove them from shelves. The three named oil products—"Wei Li Qing Xiang Oil," "Wei Li Fragrant Lard Oil," and "Cheng I Fragrant Lard Oil"—must be suspended from sale.
The Tainan District Prosecutors' Office uncovered a case where feed-grade oil was mixed with edible lard and reprocessed into refined oil products for sale. Multiple Cheng I Food Co. oil products were implicated, including 2.4-liter and 18-liter "Wei Li Qing Xiang Oil," "Wei Li Fragrant Lard Oil," "Cheng I Fragrant Lard Oil," 15-kilogram barrel lard, 180-kilogram refined lard products, animal-based baking fats, and customized products.
Kuomintang Legislator Wang Yu-min raised concerns during a morning session of the Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee in the Legislative Yuan about the contamination of Cheng I oil products and whether they would be removed from shelves.
Chiang Yu-mei responded that the FDA’s Southern Regional Administration is currently verifying accounts at Cheng I, investigating the source of the lard and the production dates and batch numbers of the products. Once accurate information is confirmed, it will be announced, and the products will be required to be removed from shelves.
After the session, Chiang told the media that during the investigation into Chang Guann Co.'s lard, other lard manufacturers were also provided to prosecutors. "The currently exposed Cheng I oil products were one of them at the time."
Currently, the FDA only has access to the Tainan District Prosecutors' Office press release, which does not specify the quantity or production period of the problematic oil products. The Kaohsiung and Tainan City Health Bureaus are in contact to confirm the details.
Chiang stated that the three named oil products—"Wei Li Qing Xiang Oil," "Wei Li Fragrant Lard Oil," and "Cheng I Fragrant Lard Oil"—must be temporarily suspended from sale until the source is clarified. This means retailers must temporarily remove them from shelves to prevent public exposure. Additionally, Cheng I must provide the distribution channels of the products, and goods currently in the factory must not be shipped.
