The number of vegetarians in the country is gradually increasing. The Taipei County Health Bureau today announced the results of random inspections conducted in August on vegetarian products within the county. It was found that 25% of the vegetarian products failed to meet standards, with 10% of them testing positive for animal-derived ingredients. This means consumers believed they were eating vegetarian food, but the products actually contained non-vegetarian components such as fish, pork, beef, or chicken. The Health Bureau stated that it has taken legal action against the relevant businesses and reminded consumers to purchase from reputable manufacturers when selecting products. The Taipei County Health Bureau recently conducted inspections of vegetarian products from businesses within the county, testing for animal-derived ingredients such as fish, pork, beef, and chicken. Out of 20 samples, five failed to meet standards. Among them, one vegetarian meatball and one konjac vegetarian ball were found to contain animal-derived ingredients, while the other three had labeling discrepancies (labeled as containing eggs but no egg components were detected). The non-compliance rate was 25%. Wang Shufen, Director of the Drug and Food Hygiene Management Division of the Health Bureau, stated that businesses have been notified to remove non-compliant products from shelves, and investigations are underway to handle the matter according to the law. She mentioned that if manufacturers claim their products are vegetarian but actually add animal-derived ingredients, they will face fines ranging from NT$60,000 to NT$300,000 under the Food Sanitation Management Act.

The Health Bureau also noted that it is difficult to visually determine whether vegetarian products contain non-vegetarian ingredients. Consumers are advised to purchase from reputable manufacturers and avoid products that are too cheap, heavily flavored, or have unclear labeling. Vegetarians are also recommended to limit their consumption of processed vegetarian foods such as vegetarian fish, vegetarian chicken, and vegetarian meat paste to avoid excessive intake of additives like thickeners, binders, bleaching agents, and preservatives. Additionally, vegetarians are advised to supplement their diet with vitamin B complex to maintain balanced health.
