A wide variety of products on the market contain antibacterial and germicidal nano-silver. However, U.S. animal studies have found that nano-silver may interfere with signaling in male sperm cells, preventing sperm from maturing and thereby affecting male fertility. Researchers also warn that nano-silver particles are extremely small and may enter the placenta of pregnant women, causing congenital defects in the reproductive systems of male fetuses.
This study was published in the journal *Toxicological Sciences*. Researchers from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign conducted experiments on mice and found that nano-silver concentrations above 10 micrograms per milliliter could impair the growth of male stem cells. The nano-silver used in the study was relatively small, ranging from 10 to 25 nanometers, with the smallest particles particularly hindering sperm stem cell development.
The study also found that if a fetus is exposed to nano-silver during its formative stages, the process of sperm cell formation can be severely disrupted, leading to abnormalities in the male fetus’s reproductive system and congenital defects. Researchers believe that because nano-silver particles are so tiny, they can easily penetrate the maternal placenta and directly affect the fetus.
Previous studies have shown that nano-silver can be toxic to lung cells, nerve cells, and skin cells, and may also infiltrate the brain, circulating through the bloodstream to other body tissues. Both human and animal studies indicate that some nanoparticles may even invade the placenta.
Researchers expressed deep concern, noting that nano-silver is widely used in various products, and people may unknowingly ingest or inhale it, allowing the particles to enter their tissues. Additionally, washing nano-silver products may release the particles into the environment through water, disrupting natural ecosystems.
