A new report released today by the World Wildlife Fund states that China is now consuming more than twice the ecological capacity that its ecosystem can sustainably provide, with demand having doubled since the 1960s.
The report, jointly published by the World Wildlife Fund and the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, indicates that China currently uses 15% of the global total ecological capacity.
The report found that in 2003, China's average ecological footprint was 1.6 hectares, meaning each person required 1.6 hectares of biologically productive land to support their lifestyle. The 2003 data is the most recent available.
The report states that although this figure is still lower than the global average of 2.2 hectares per person, "considering China's vast population and strong economic development, this still poses a challenge."
"If China were to catch up with the current top-ranked United States, where each person requires nearly ten hectares of productive area, China would need the entire planet's available capacity."
